Research suggests that young adult women exposed prenatally to testosterone have a reduced likelihood of developing eating disorders. The finding, researchers say, provides further evidence that biological factors – and not just social influences – are involved in anorexia and bulimia. In an ongoing study of 538 sets of twins in Michigan, researchers observed that females who were in the womb with male twins have lower risk for eating disorder symptoms than females who were in the womb with female twins.

Previous research has shown that females in the womb with males are exposed to higher levels of testosterone, Dr. Kelly L. Klump and colleagues from Michigan State University in East Lansing explain in the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Depression may occur at almost any stage of life, from childhood to middle or old age, as a result of a number of different factors that lead to chemical changes in the brain. Traumatic experiences, chronic stress, emotional loss, dysfunctional interpersonal relationships, social isolation, biological changes, aging, and inherited predisposition are common triggers for the symptoms of depression. Depression is classified according to the symptoms displayed and patterns of occurrence. Types of depression include major depressive disorder, bipolar depressive disorder, psychotic depressive disorder, postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and seasonal disorder. Additional types of depression are included under the label of atypical depressive disorder. Many symptoms overlap among the types of depression, and not all people with depression experience all the symptoms associated with their particular type of the disorder.

Most of us who live in industrialized parts of the world know that it is sometimes not friendly. With all the advanced technology that we have and all the things that make life “easier”, all the amenities of dour modern world we sometimes feel alone and sad, this is just natural and we somehow recover and end up as a better person, with a better understanding of life. But, sometimes for some people, the recovery process does not happen and they stay in the “sad” mood that they are in for long periods of time, sometimes years. This can cause a big problem and the correct term for this is Depression. Depression is a common psychiatric disorder in the modern world and a growing cause of concern for health agencies worldwide due to the high social and economic costs involved.

- Identity formation is really intense. Kids usually experiment with various roles, such as looks, friendship, etc.
- Girls may resort to dieting, or worst yet, eating disorder because they want to have a certain type of body.

Normally, teenagers tend to copy other kids, particularly what they see on TV. Clothes, music, and even expressions. Most of the time, this makes it hard for parents to accept or to say something about the changes with their teenagers. Peer pressure becomes very apparent when they emphasize that their friends are more important more than anything else. But, the real issue about this matter is when kids come across bad influences.

Cutting takes a whole different meaning when teenagers associate it with emotional pain. Cutting has been a way to stop their so-called unbearable issues. It is actually self-injury, which results from invalidation. Perhaps kids are made to believe that their interpretation of feelings is wrong or bad. In short, they are not allowed to feel that way so they have to punish themselves by cutting. Most of the time, their parents, guardians or any family members have formerly severely punished them for expression of such feelings and thoughts.

Counselors and therapists as well as medical and mental health professionals are not necessarily more qualified to evaluate and deal with a risk of suicide than a reasonable person.

Physicians are trained to diagnose and treat medical conditions, medicate if necessary, and admit patients to holding or psychiatric facilities. Evaluation, intervention and treatment of a suicide risk are specialized skills that require training and supervised experience.

Program personnel should consider themselves responsible for the outcome, when that program and their staff assume the authority to intervene or dismiss the risk of suicide.

The evaluation of a suicide risk is in fact an intervention and that intervention should not end once the child’s risk is no longer considered immediate. Consultation with parents and obtaining second opinions from qualified professionals are reasonable standards of practice.

A minimally qualified professional to deal with a suicide risk would have:

~ a masters degree in a mental health field,
~ licensure in a mental health field,
~ 16 hours of continuing education training in crisis intervention (with emphasis on suicide and violence risk), and
~ 6 months of supervised experience and training working with suicidal adults and children on regular basis.

Professionals with minimal qualifications should also be obtaining consultation on a regular basis from a professional who has expert skill and experience.

Programs have a duty to insure proper care. This duty is clear if the child displays any critical risk factors.

Programs must be vigilant if the admission reveals a history of a previous hospitalization or residential treatment, the child is on medications for a psychiatric condition, or there is a history of dangerous or self-harming behavior as well as failing social and educational performance.

Programs must pro-actively examine the potential interaction effects between each child and program structure before and after admission. Supervision or consultation with a qualified person as well as face to face evaluation are essential when staff are not qualified to deal with a risk of suicide
